Spragge Bible Church

The first Christian work in Spragge probably began in the late 1940’s under  Mr. Batson as the area was booming because of the lumber mill in Spragge, and then later as the mines in Spragge, Pronto and Elliot Lake developed.

Spragge Bible Church began, by the grace of God,  under the leadership of Abe and Shirley Janzan in 1959. It was called Bethesda Fellowship then and met in a converted, transported, reconstructed mine building. Some things don’t change. We still meet in a converted, transported, reconstructed mine building, in fact 2 of them. Many came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ under the Janzens.

Under Bruno Toews the church began meeting in the vacated Charles Marcellus School in Spragge. At that time the land we own was acquired from Rio Algom and the buildings we now occupy were purchased, moved and renovated. This site is central to Algoma Mills, Spragge, Spanish, Cutler, and Elliot Lake. The mines closed, people moved away, but the church continued to serve. The Mennonite Brethren folk from southern Ontario helped tremendously during those years of renovating, with funds, materials and workers.

Willie and Margaret Baerg came to us after many busy years of rugged work in Zaire, Africa. Moving to lonely little Spragge Ontario must have been a shock!. Many came to Christ. It was then we had our first baptisms in the north channel near Bootleggers Bay! A strange thing happened. A long line of baptismal candidates lead along the beach when a man drove up and jumped out of his car.  One of the elders explained that we were having a baptism service.

“Can I be baptized too”, he asked excitedly. The elder explained that one needed to be a follower of Jesus Christ in order to be baptized. Apparently this French Canadian man had recently received Jesus Christ as hi savior recently.

The elder said, “Get in the end of the line!” And he did!

We were then privileged to have a young family come up to take up the work, Archie and Erna Jantzen from Manitoba who gave us 12 years of faithful service before moving to Fresno, California for more theological training.

Vaughn Giggi and Howard Booker then served as interim pastors until Darwin and Cindy Davies arrived under Village Missions. Pastor Darwin grew the church with a wonderful youth ministry. At that time we changed our name to Spragge Bible Church.

After this Rick and Mabel Bruce came to us from New Brunswick in 1992. The bus ministry brought in many folk from Elliot Lake during their 4 years here.

John and Lillian Grey, retired missionaries from India who moved up from Toronto, served as interim pastor. Marvin McFarlane from Elliot Lake served until Ken Faulkner Sr. and John his son from Massey served several years as full time pastor. We especially enjoyed Pastor Ken’s fantastic scripture memory.

Ralph and Joanne Hamminga came under the auspices of Village Missions. They left to serve a church New Brunswick.

Pastor Goliath, retiring from the Baptist Church in Elliot Lake , served as a half time pastor. We enjoyed having an experienced to guide us for three years in constitutional policy and planning.  One of our elders Ken Leffler, a real estate agent, then took over the pulpit.

When we heard that Neil and Karen Elson were leaving Galilean Bible Camp, the church decided to call them to a full time pastorate in Spragge. They stayed for 8 years of fruitful ministry.  They left at the beginning of Covid and all the restrictions entailed.

Pastor Ernest Bauserman and his wife Darlene were happy to come to us, after finding retirement in Elliot Lake did not suit them. They were missionaries from Virginia who were called to serve in Quebec under World Wide Baptist Missions Evangelism. He served as the Canadian representative of the mission at the same time.  Presently Pastor Ernest serves as our pastor.
